Barry Bergman

Winemaker,
Night Harvest

Night Harvest’s winemaker Barry Bergman joined R. H. Phillips in 1987. Several years earlier, Barry had discovered wine while working at a restaurant in Colorado. Quickly becoming a wine enthusiast, he decided to earn a degree in winemaking even though he had never set foot in a vineyard or winery! In 1986, upon admittance to the Fermentation Sciences program at the University of California at Davis, Barry moved to California.

Immersing himself in the U.C. Davis program, Barry developed a love for California wines, including a popular new brand called R.H. Phillips, whose vineyard and winery were located nearby in the Dunnigan Hills of Yolo County. Needing to finance his schooling, Barry secured a job at R.H. Phillips that allowed him to work part-time year-round. He quickly made himself indispensable and, upon his graduation in 1989, was offered an assistant winemaker position. Five years later, in 1994, Barry was appointed head winemaker and, in 2006, added the role of general manager.

As an early fan of R.H. Phillips’ Night Harvest wines, it’s fitting that Barry, now in his 20th year at the winery, continues to oversee their creation. With a superior estate vineyard and state-of-the-art winery at his disposal, Barry has all the tools he needs to craft outstanding varietal wines from pristine grapes harvested under the stars.
