Inglenook Vineyards Teams Up with Northwest  Retailers To Fund Breast Cancer Research

CONCORD, Calif., October 21, 2002 – Inglenook Vineyards is teaming up with retailers in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho and Montana to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2002.  Inglenook will donate a portion of October sales in those states – up to $10,000 – to the highly respected American Association for Cancer Research  (AACR) to support breast cancer research.

Retailers in the region are participating in the program through special in-store displays.  One dollar for each of the first 10,000 bottles of Inglenook wine sold in these states in October will be donated to breast cancer research through the AACR. Consumers interested in supporting the effort can purchase Inglenook wines during the month of October.

Inglenook chose the AACR as the recipient of the donation because of its long and distinguished track record in cancer research.  Founded in 1907, the AACR is the world’s oldest and largest scientific organization dedicated to preventing and curing cancer, and counts over 18,000 laboratory and clinical cancer researchers as members.  Its mission includes fostering research in cancer and related biomedical sciences; encouraging presentation of new and important observations in the field; fostering science education and training; and advancing understanding of the origins, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer throughout the world.

“Inglenook is proud to be a partner with the AACR to help find a cure for breast cancer,” said Diana Pawlik, brand manager for Inglenook.  “We hope local residents will join us in this important effort.”  Inglenook Vineyards will also donate a portion of the month’s national sales to provide “Inglenook Awards” to top early-career scientists who will present their work at the 94th Annual Meeting of the AACR, the world’s largest gathering of international cancer scientists.

Recent studies show that breast cancer is the leading form of cancer in women, and one in eight women will develop the disease during her lifetime.  With its large number of consumers, Inglenook – a Canandaigua Wine Company brand that sells nearly 5 million cases of wine each year – hopes to raise public awareness of the disease and support the search for a cure.
